Making Math Fun with Card Games

This fun new class is coming to schools in Bloomington, Shakopee,  and Richfield.  Using a regular deck of cards, students learn card games that will improve their number sense and addition and subtraction fluency.

I use an activity from YouCubed during class using dice and colored pencils. You can find it here.

You do not need to be able to multiply to play this game. It is amazing how fast kids catch on and it will build a foundation for later multiplication work.

Another of my favorite resources is a 100 wheel. You can use it for counting up and down within 100, fractions, decimals,  and percentages. I bought this online and you can too. It is not my product but I love it! For my students I added a transparent sheet of vinyl that I cut out of a divider sheet, the kind used  in three-ring binders. This layer makes it easier for students to see how far away from 100 they are. I was looking around for the blue transparent sheets used with the old-style overhead projectors but had no luck.  We use this wheel and/or a 100 chart when playing Oh No, 99 until the students get faster at adding and subtracting numbers to 100.
